Jean-François Millet (October 4, 1814 - January 20, 1875) was a French painter whose style tightroped the line between naturalism and realism. He was also one of the founders of the Barbizon school in rural France. Jean-François Millet was a celebrated French painter and member of what became known as the Barbizon School. In his dusky painting The Gleaners (1857), Millet meditated on the profound relationship he saw between peasants and the landscapes they farmed. Jean François Millet is known for developing a painting style that depicted the social conditions of the time. He was both widely acclaimed and despised for his political beliefs. Millet was, himself, born into poverty in 1814 in the town of Gruchy, Greville-Hague (Normandy).
